1. Harvest Markets has a rich history. Can you tell us when it was established?
The first shop opened in Mount Gravatt in 1974. The business then moved to the Booval site, which was purchased in 1981 and was the first fruit shop in Ipswich.
2. It is a family business in every sense. How many generations have been involved?
There are four generations of fruit and vegetable operators in our family. My great-grandfather established the business and I am the third-generation owner/operator following in my father’s footsteps. My nephew will be the fourth generation.
3. What is the key to the success of the business?
The key to our success is consistency in the quality of our product and the high level of customer service Harvest Markets has provided for generations.
4. What sets Harvest Markets apart from your competitors?
We do business differently. We personally select all our stock and do not sacrifice quality for a better deal with suppliers. At Harvest Markets we pride ourselves on the exceptional quality of our produce.
Our team members have exceptional product knowledge and we know many of our customers by name. We are genuinely interested in what people are doing with their lives. We care about the community and regularly get involved with groups such as local clubs and schools.
5. Where do you source your products from?
From Monday to Friday we carefully select our produce from a variety of vendors at the Rocklea markets. Our approach is to choose the freshest product with a preference for locally grown options.
6. What does the Harvest Markets customer base look like?
The majority are local residents, although we do have customers that travel a great distance to visit our shop. Those who travel to shop with us are motivated by the quality and freshness of our product. Customer loyalty is something we have worked hard to establish. A a large portion of our customers are regular shoppers.
7. Why is Yamanto Central the right fit for Harvest Market?
When the opportunity to open a store at Yamanto Central came up it ticked all the right boxes for us. It’s a new, modern centre, we are able to capitalise on increased access to foot traffic generated by other stores and the location is right between the RAAF base at Amberley and the growing Ripley Valley housing estate.
The rapid population growth in Ipswich has reached a point where we can now have two stores in close proximity to one another, but not affect trade for our existing business. We wanted to give people in the surrounding areas a chance to come to us for their fresh produce as an alternative to large supermarkets.
